To reduce carbon emissions in the residential sector, it is important to promote energy-efficient behavior among consumers. Home Energy Reports (HERs), which provide feedback to households on their energy consumption along with social comparisons, are a well-known behavioral program.
However, it is not known whether the energy-saving impacts of HERs vary by climate, season, and water/space heating systems.
In this study, we conducted a large-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) in five regions of Japan with different climates to examine the energy-saving effects of HERs.Additionally, we analyzed the heterogeneity of treatment effects on energy savings by energy contract type.
The results indicated that the energy-saving effect of HERs was more pronounced during the heating season in both cold and warm climates. On the other hand, the energy-saving effect was less pronounced for households using electric thermal storage water/space heating systems.
